Competencies

Competence is the ability of an individual to do a job properly. A competency is a set of defined behaviours that provide a structured guide, enabling the identification, evaluation and development of the behaviours in individual employees. Competencies are therefore related to a resource.

In On Key, specific competencies that a resource might require when undertaking work are defined. The proficiency level specified for a resource determines if the resource is "sufficiently competent" to undertake an allocated task. A competency would normally cover the "legal" aspects of being able to undertake a task, while the proficiency identifies the "best skilled" resource for the task.

The Resource Type field on a resource is used to define whether the resource is a "Staff Member", "Special Resource" or "Contact". Resource types could require certain competencies in order to perform work. A staff member could require these competencies:

Staff member competencies

  • Medical
  • Welder certificate
  • Computer literate.

A special resource could also require certain competencies, as follows:

Special resource competency

  • Calibration certificate.
